Head, Medical Application Sections , Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Govt. of India
Dr. Ghanshyam Sahani (Dr. G. Sahni) serves as the Head of the Medical & Research Applications Section in the Radiological Safety Division of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Government of India. In this critical leadership role, he is responsible for overseeing the regulation and safety of a wide array of radiation-using facilities — from diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine to radiotherapy and research laboratories. Under his supervision, AERB enforces stringent radiation protection norms, licensing processes, and safety inspections, ensuring that medical and research institutions comply with national safety codes and guidelines.
Dr. Sahani’s contributions also extend beyond regulatory oversight: he is actively engaged in capacity-building efforts, guiding technical discourse on topics such as shielding design in radiotherapy and regulatory frameworks. For instance, he was a speaker at a College of Medical Physics of India (CMPI) webinar on shielding calculations for radiotherapy facilities. Moreover, his work reflects AERB’s broader mission to enable the safe use of ionising radiation in medicine and research — minimizing health risks while promoting innovation.
He also plays a key role in shaping and updating AERB’s safety codes, especially those related to therapeutic radiation sources and diagnostic X-ray equipment. His regulatory expertise is further highlighted through his participation in international forums: for example, in his contribution to the International Conference on Occupational Radiation Protection, Dr. Sahani presented on occupational radiation protection in radiotherapy from a regulatory perspective.
