About Dr. Neelam Dhingra

Neelam Dhingra, MBBS, MD, is the Vice President and Global Chief Patient Safety Officer for Joint Commission International (JCI). In this role, she leads JCI’s efforts to provide strategic leadership on patient safety and promotes all aspects of its patient safety and quality improvement activities internationally. Dr. Dhingra has conceptualized and designed a new, strategic initiative ‘JCI Patient Safety Pathways’ to support capability building and development of patient safety and quality programs in healthcare organizations, especially in the public sector in low- and middle-income countries, across the world.


Dr. Dhingra is a dedicated professional and passionate global advocate with decades of experience in the field of patient safety, both nationally and internationally. Prior to joining JCI, Dr. Dhingra led the World Health Organization’s (WHO) programs on patient safety and blood safety for 25 years at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, with her previous position being Unit Head, Patient Safety Flagship. Under her leadership in this role, several key milestones were achieved including the WHO Flagship Initiative “A Decade of Patient Safety 2021-2030”, WHO Global Patient Safety Report 2024, World Health Assembly resolution ‘Global Action on Patient Safety’, ‘Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030', World Patient Safety Day, Global Patient Safety Network, Patient and Family Engagement and Global Patient Safety Challenge: Medication Without Harm, among others. She has extensive national and international expertise in patient safety and quality improvement, health systems, blood transfusion medicine and hematology.


Dr Dhingra has been appointed as the Honorary Affiliate Faculty, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA; Honorary Senior Faculty of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute for Patient Safety & Quality, Singapore; and a Life Member of ISQua’s Academy of Quality and Safety in Health Care.


Dr. Dhingra received medical graduate degree, MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, India. She received post graduate medical degree, MD (Doctor of Medicine) Pathology from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India, and two-year advanced training fellowships from the United Kingdom.
