Professor Geeta Menon is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust in Surrey. In addition to high-volume cataract surgery, she has developed a major interest in medical retina, particularly novel treatments for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She designed and established a Mobile Macular Unit, the first of its kind in the country and won ‘Best example of Efficiencies’ at the prestigious ‘Building Better Healthcare Awards’. The UK patient charity, the Macular Disease Society awarded her macula service the coveted Clinical Service of the Year award 2014. The Macular Service was rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) 2014.
She is the Clinical Director for Kent, Surrey and Sussex Local Clinical Research Network looking after research in all subspecialties in the region. In 2016 she was awarded the joint Royal College of Physicians and NIHR award for ‘Outstanding Research Leadership in the NHS’.
She has been appointed Postgraduate Dean for Health Education England across South London in April 2018. She is the National Clinical Director for workforce for Cancer and Diagnostics in the Workforce Training and Education Directorate in NHS England. She was appointed Senior Dean for Inclusive Integrated Careers in December 2023. She is also the Lead Dean for SAS and Locally Employed Doctors and National Lead for MWRES.
Through the VISION 2020 links programme she has set up Diabetic Retinopathy Screening (DRS) in the Copperbelt province of Zambia. Her method of training is used as a trailblazer to develop DRS in Africa potentially averting blindness. This was a significant development for diabetic healthcare in Zambia. She has extended this programme to cover the island of St Lucia and Northern India. In March 2017 she was honoured at the Excellence in Patient Care Awards hosted by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) where she received the International Award for her work.
In 2016 she was awarded a prestigious Gold Clinical Excellence award for contributions to the UK National Health Service over and above her routine clinical practice.
She was elected Fellow of Royal College of Physicians in 2016.
In 2020 she was Highly commended for Asian Women of Achievement Award in the Professional category for her contribution to the profession.
She was appointed Chair of BAPIO in February 2023 being the first female chair since its inception 25 years ago.
