Prof. (Dr.) Bimla Kapoor is a distinguished Nursing professional and educator who has played a pivotal role in shaping nursing policies in India. She has served as Chairperson of multiple expert committees under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOH&FW), including the NNMC Bill 2020, Nurse-Patient Ratio, and Nursing Development Guidelines. A lifelong member of various nursing associations, she has also served as a consultant to universities, NGOs, and global organizations like WHO, UNICEF, FHI 360, and EDCIL. She has contributed significantly to nursing curriculum development, ethical boards, and academic councils.
Dr. Kapoor holds a B.Sc. Nursing (Hons.) from RAK College of Nursing, Delhi University (1970), an M.Sc. Nursing (1980) with a President’s Gold Medal, an M.Phil. (1990), a Post Graduate Diploma in Distance Education (1998), and a Ph.D. in Education (2005) from IGNOU. Committed to lifelong learning, she has completed various specialized courses in nursing education, administration, and research.
Recognized for her contributions, she has received numerous awards, including the WHO Fellowship, NHS 50th Anniversary Fellowship (UK), and the Nehru Foundation’s Excellence in Nursing Award. She was named among the 100 Outstanding Women Nurse and Midwife Leaders by Women in Global Health (2020) and has received multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards from nursing organizations. In 2023, she was bestowed with the title "Iron Lady in Nursing."
With over 50 years of experience, Dr. Kapoor is an expert in Nursing Education, Research, Mental Health, Distance Learning, and Curriculum Development. She has mentored over 20 Ph.D. scholars and 30 postgraduates, published extensively, and authored Textbook of Psychiatric Nursing, the first Indian book in the field. She has also developed modules on HIV/AIDS, adolescent health, and nursing research.
A pioneer in nursing education, she played a crucial role in establishing the Delhi Nursing Council as its first President. She has also spearheaded the launch of Ph.D. Nursing, B.Sc. Nursing, and diploma programs nationally and internationally in Nepal, Seychelles, and Doha. She has consulted for universities across India and globally, including in the UK, USA, Thailand, Abu Dhabi, Bhutan, and Maldives. An eminent speaker and advisor, she has presented papers, conducted workshops, and contributed to policy reforms in nursing education, administration, and research.
